DevOps with Windows

November 12, 2013 CollabNet VersionOne

We're going to try a run at Chocolatey and Boxstarter for some Windows-based machine imaging.

Until now, we have been installing test machines by hand and maintaining them over long periods of time.  Now that we've discovered the ready-to-roll Amazon AMI images for Windows Server, we're ready to start using a better approach.

The game plan is this:

  • Standard Windows 2012 AMI from Amazon
  • Amazon Cloudformation script that installs Chocolatey after booting windows, then runs boxstarter script
  • Boxstarter package that gets SQL Server, ASP.NET, and VersionOne installed

This means we'll be attempting to package VersionOne as a Chocolatey package!  We think this will make things a bit easier for our customers _and_ our Hosted services guys too.
